São Luís Historical Tour

Take a journey through the history of Maranhão. Experience almost 400 years of this city of multiple ethnicities and its popular culture, recognized as one of the most important historical sites in the Americas. Start with a panoramic tour, stopping for a short walk in the Praia Grande and Desterro neighborhoods, and the historic center, now known as Reviver. Visit Praça Pedro and the Palácio dos Leões, which was the fortress of Equinoctial France until 1615 and housed the state government until 1993. See the beautiful Ribeirão Fountain, dating from 1796, where there are three access points to the underground passages used to drain rainwater. Also visit the Mercês Convent, the Desterro Church and the Tulhas Market. The Sé Church, built by the Jesuits in 1726, and the 1627 Carmo Church, one of the oldest in the city, are other attractions on the tour. The Casa do Maranhão houses an important aspect of local culture.
