Igarassu, one of the first cities in Latin America, located 65 km from Recife, is the historic city where you’ll find the oldest church in Brazil, the Church of São Cosme e Damião, dating from 1535, and the former Convent of Santo Antonio, where the most important paintings from colonial Brazil are on display. Next, a visit to the island of Itamaracá, whose indigenous name means “stones that sing”. Itamaracá is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is covered in coconut trees, which make up the landscape with beautiful beaches with clear, warm waters. The main attraction is Fort Orange, a magnificent 17th century fortification built by the Dutch when they invaded the region.
