São Luís

São Luís

Declared a World Heritage Site, the capital of the state of Maranhão, São Luís, on the island of the same name, is located between São Marcos Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mosquitos Strait.
São Luís is especially famous for the decorated tiles that line the walls of the beautiful houses in the historic center, a well-preserved legacy from the Colonial Period and proof of the Portuguese influence in the area. The first Europeans to arrive in Maranhão were the Spanish in 1500, but it was the French who effectively occupied the city in 1612, founding Equinoctial France.
The Dutch Crown also occupied the area before it was definitively conquered by the Portuguese. For these reasons, São Luís is home to an important part of Brazil’s history. São Luís was called the “Brazilian Athens” in the 19th century, due to the atmosphere of the central market and the city’s cultural importance.
There you’ll find the Museum of Visual Arts, with works by local artists and European tiles from the 19th and 20th centuries; the Museum of Popular Art, another center of popular culture, and the Arthur Azevedo Theater, built between 1815 and 1817, the first theater in a Brazilian capital.
On the city’s seafront, highlights include the wonderful Calhau Beach; the ruins of Santo Antônio Fort (1691), at Ponta da Areia; and the ruins of São Marcos Fort, at São Marcos Beach. Araçaji Beach is considered the most beautiful in the whole area. It is from São Luís that we set off to visit one of the most incredible places in Brazil: the Lençóis Maranhenses, with its 383,000 acres (155,000 hectares) of white dune strips, formed by multicolored freshwater lagoons that create oases reflected between thousands of sand dunes. The Lençóis Maranhenses are also considered one of the most amazing landscapes in the world.
