Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre, the capital of Brazil’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, is situated on the banks of the beautiful Guaíba River, and is known for its ethnic diversity: a mix of 25 different ethnic groups, most of whose descendants are Italian, German and Portuguese immigrants.
The Gauchos – the name by which local citizens are called – also have a very strong influence from the southern countries of Latin America; they were the inventors of the famous Brazilian barbecue! The beauty of Porto Alegre’s vegetation, mountains and lakes moves visitors, who are also impressed by the many historical sites, an important feature of the country’s southern history. Strategically located right in the middle, between Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo and Buenos Aires/Montevideo (capitals of Argentina and Uruguay, respectively) Porto Alegre plays an important role in the Mercosur Community, being the most important business center in the Southern Cone area.
In a unique mix, the city has the rhythm of a state capital, with rural customs. Cosmopolitan in cultural and gastronomic aspects, famous for its shopping area, Porto Alegre also has beautiful architecture, based on European standards. From Porto Alegre, it is possible to visit some of the most beautiful mountain locations in Brazil, from the traditional winter cities of Gramado, famous for producing special chocolates, and Canela, where wonderful hydrangeas are grown, the most beautiful and colorful, which complete the beauty of this city with architecture strongly influenced by aspects of Bavaria; to the historical sites of Rio Grande do Sul, where you will find the Jesuit Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The temperate climate and geography have made the state of Rio Grande do Sul an important wine producer. It is essential to visit the famous wine regions of Caxias do Sul and Bento Gonçalves, where visitors can even take part in the vineyard.
Ecotourism is also a strong attraction, such as the Aparados Serra National Park, located in this southern state, where you can enjoy the spectacle of the 8 km-long Itaimbezinho Gorge and its impressive landscapes and waterfalls. The largest beaches in Brazil are also located in Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the Torres region, which is very famous for its “guaritas”, which are large stone formations in the sand or jutting out of the water.
